Irshad Hussain is an internationally recognised scientist in nanoscience and materials chemistry, with two decades of work focusing on functional nanomaterials for catalysis, clean energy, and biomedicine. Born in Jhang, he earned his master’s degree in chemistry from Quaid-i-Azam University and later completed his PhD at the University of Liverpool.
He is a tenured Professor of Chemistry at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), where he is a founding faculty member of the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering. He played a central role in developing the university’s chemistry department and served as its chair from 2010 to 2016. In addition to his work at LUMS, he is the founding project director of Pakistan’s National Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and previously worked at the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.
His extensive research is backed by a prolific academic record, holding over 185 publications in prominent scientific journals. He is highly regarded for developing reproducible methods to create highly uniform nanoclusters and nanoparticles.
Hussain has also held several national leadership roles, including chairing the National Nanotech Experts Panel for the Government of Pakistan. He has received numerous awards for his scientific contributions, notably a prestigious Charles Wallace Fellowship at the University of Cambridge and two Gold Medals in Chemistry from the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (2007 and 2014). He was also elected as a Fellow of both the Pakistan Academy of Sciences and the UK’s Royal Society of Chemistry.
